The FUT technique is one of the many hair restoration options offered at Freia Medical. Taking hair from the healthy area at the back, we transplant these hairs into the thinning areas in the front and top of the scalp, creating a rejuvenated and renewed hair style.
FUT is considered the most established technique of modern hair transplantation. A thin strip of hair is removed from the back of the scalp under local anaesthesia.
Dr. Harold Ma calls this the “SAFE” or the “PERMANENT” zone. This hair is genetically programmed not to fall out and they are therefore long lasting.
The donor strip is then dissected under high powered microscope specifically designed for hair restoration surgery into microscopic grafts of individual follicular units, of one to four hairs. This is like one plant, with one to four leaves.
The dissection of grafts is an important step in hair restoration surgery. It must be precise in order to gain the best yield from your donor area. These precious grafts are placed in a temperature-controlled, special tissue storage solution and kept as such until they are meticulously placed in the recipient sites created by Dr. Harold Ma.
Next, the scalp is carefully closed using the trichophytic closure for the best wound healing. This gives the best possible aesthetic result at the donor area.
Most of our FUT patients do not mind the very faint line (linear scar) at the back of the scalp as the surrounding hair makes it very difficult to detect.
Dr. Harold Ma personally makes the implant sites, taking into consideration your head shape, facial features, existing hair growth and direction. Extreme attention is given to the exact angle and direction of each tiny recipient site in order to maximize the redistribution of your transplanted hair to achieve aesthetic and artistic density, meaning to give the most natural looking result and the greatest illusion of more hair.
In general, he tends to position the 1-hair grafts in the frontal hairline and temporal peaks, the 2-hair grafts immediately behind the hairline grafts and the 3 and 4 hair follicular units are placed through central and forelock zones.
This is how nature intended for your scalp and that is how Dr. Harold Ma rebuilds your new hair.
The advantages of a strip technique is that there is no need to shave the donor area, compared with FUE or Robotic ARTAS techniques. It is also a very good option if a mega hair transplant session (more than 2000 grafts) is planned. From a cost perspective, a FUT procedure is lower compared with FUE or Robotic FUE.
Occasionally, we even combine FUT with FUE techniques to get the maximum number of grafts in one session. That way, we may be able to obtain in excess of 3000 grafts in one session.

Transplanted hair goes through the same resting and growing phases of your normal hair. The hairs of the transplanted grafts will begin to grow at approximately 4 months after your procedure and continue through months 10 – 12 post-operatively. The new hairs:
